Catering workers in Sheffield have this morning been told they have won sick pay from day one of absence. This means no one will be on statutory sick pay but on a full occupational sick pay scheme.
This has been won by the hard work of catering workers in Sheffield who were fed-up of being treated like they do not do a good job. Together with UNISON, they have been able to send a clear message to decision makers that this is not acceptable.
Together in Reading we can do the same and demand from Chartwells that they also pay full sick pay.
Next meeting February 26th at 1pm in Reading. Venue TBC.
Happy New Year to everyone who works for Chartwells in Reading. May 2011 bring everyone a prosperous year.
Workers from across Reading schools met in central Reading last night to hear Colin McIntosh talk about the new contract procurement process and hear concerns from workers over current practices in the Chartwells contract. Kit Kats, tea and coffee flowed as Colin spoke about the staff being front and centre in the contract negotiations and UNISON being on the Procurement Board. It was a great evening and as a result an urgent meeting was scheduled between the council and Chartwells re: some of the practices being dished out to our workers.
Here is some of what we discussed:
- Cutlery & equipment
- Rummaging through bins
- Being told to 'make do'
- Chartwells training of mobile and agency staff
- Lack of consultation over new pay structure
- Micklands phone line issue
- Training time for e-learning
- Lack of office equipment, e.g. toner cartridges
- Communication...this is a real biggie
- The banking and liability insurance
- Trolleys and carrying of meals
- Halal policies and training
- Rish register
- Steamer replacements
- Managers and their differing practices
- And the Christmas Puddings!
And that was just in two hours!
Last night workers from across Reading schools spoke about their experiences working with Chartwells in Reading schools. In the audience were a wide range of Labour Party members including the leader of the Labour Group on Reading Borough Council and former leader Cllr Jo Lovelock along with Cllr Jon Hartley, Labour Group Education spokesman and many more. One of our workers spoke for the first time in front of such a large audience but the message she made was clear and robust. Exciting times ahead.
Key leaders from Chartwells workers' in Reading met on Saturday 11th September for talks on the next steps of their campaign to win better terms and conditions from Chartwells.
"These meetings are essential to working together for all workers now and those that will be employed by Chartwells in the future," said one of our new stewards.
On the home page there is now a briefing document on Chartwells in Reading, and also at the end of this page. This document includes a plegde which we are asking everyone to sign. The pledge reads:
I recognise that across Reading schools, workers in Chartwells cook and provide high quality service for thousands of children every day. The high quality food and service help children focus on learning in the best possible environment, irrespective of their cultural background.
I am proud of the work they do, but worsening conditions and no sick pay are making it harder for the workers to do their best for the children and the Reading community.
Count Me In! I am joining with the workers from my community to improve the terms and conditions for Chartwells workers on the school’s catering contract.

Workers from Chartwells contracts in the UK and Sodexo met with Columbian workers on Monday and heard about how companies operating in Reading, Sheffield, London, Buckinghamshire and Southampton are treating workers doing the same jobs as many in the UK and just what they have to go through to be a member of a trade union.
We have been invited to speak at the joint Reading constituency meeting of the Reading Labour Party on Thursday 16th September at 8pm. More details to follow...
